It has been the subject of cryptozoology, anthropology, archaeology, and science fiction since early times. It has neither been seen nor heard, and even the creatures which have been claimed to have seen it are often unsure of its appearance, as it is very elusive.
The most likely reason for the unidentified nature of this creature is that it is a primate. Modern humans only interbreed with different types of human beings because of the massive immigration that accompanied the Ice Ages, approximately 10 million years ago. Therefore, most modern people today are descended from a group of ancient peoples who possessed gigantic feet and a torso that would qualify as ‘normal’ for their time. Bigfoot, being archaic species, most likely lack any outward signs of modern human features, and is thus, most often assumed to be an unknown species, like Bigfoot, or Sasquatch.
Another hypothesis as to what it is about Bigfoot that makes it so captivating is that it resembles a large, extinct primate called the dingo. The name comes from the unique vocal intonation, or ‘dung-doo,’ that these creatures make when playing. A lot of these sounds resemble that of a call that a large domestic dog makes; however, with the difference of the length and strength of the call, which can measure several octaves, the comparison is nearly perfect. These digital video recordings of alleged Sasquatches were taken by witnesses; however, these experts were not sure whether the voice belonged to a primate or a non-primate. Thus, more study remained needed to confirm or refutations of the creature’s identity.
In the case of the alleged Sasquatch, there are several documented accounts from varying locations in North America. The most popular places where these alleged sightings have been noted include; Indian reservations, dense forests, and mountain peaks. But does this mean that these alleged sightings are definitely real? In fact, many scientists have dismissed the entire concept of Bigfoot as nothing but a fabrication, even after interviewing a number of alleged witnesses.
Some experts also point out that the majority of the reports of Bigfoot are not genuine, or just sheer coincidence. For example, Val Valenti was the first to document the supposed monster. However, even with Valenti’s credentials as a photographer, none of his pictures ever came close to resembling anything that could be compared to a large hairy creature. Yet, Valenti continues to believe that there is a link between the alleged giant ape and North America. He believes that the ‘scents’ heard in many of these sighting cases are caused by Bigfoot, and the fact that many of the tracks look similar to those of a giant African mammal.
However, David M. Meldrum, who is considered an expert in DNA analysis, dismisses the idea of Bigfoot. He says, “No one can find Bigfoot in the North American continent, because it doesn’t exist.” Despite this, Valenti and other researchers continue to follow up on the topic, with some success. Among the results of past research are some rather convincing footprint casts that resemble the sapling of a giant sardogrone, and the cast of a black-finned cow that reportedly showed up in the Santa Cruz National Park.
