Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one among the many essential oils used in the US as a medicinal substance for conditions such as cancer, AIDS, and several other diseases. However, when administered or taken in food, it is also considered a “passive” drug because it does not produce any physical effects on the body. Instead, it acts as a “gatekeeper” between different chemicals in our bodies. It prevents harmful substances from getting into the blood stream and reduces the intensity and frequency of certain diseases such as coughing and even helps to protect the heart.

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a phytochemical found in 1940. It is currently one of the safest and most effective ingredients used in pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements for a variety of ailments. One of its benefits is that it reduces seizures in children and prevents the occurrence of epileptic seizures in epileptic patients with a history of epilepsy. In addition, it has been shown to reduce spasticity, improve focus and attention, and increase the duration of motions known as “preferred” slow wave sleep. In clinical studies, cannabidiol has been shown to have efficacy in treating a wide range of illnesses, including glaucoma, MS, seizures, chronic pain, menopause, migraine headaches, dysthymia, and multiple sclerosis (MS).

In recent years, CBD has been seen as a “miracle cure” and has gained increased attention from both the medical community and the general public. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people have purchased cannabidiol-based (and CBD-free) products from health food shops to online distributors. This increased interest in CBD products has created an opportunity for companies to enter the marketplace and provide CBD products to interested parties who are not yet well-informed about the health properties of CBD. Two companies who have recently announced the availability of CBD products are Nutritional Products Inc (NPI) and Wock Research Inc. Both companies have filed non-clinical drug applications with the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and have received approval to market CBD-based dietary supplements. In an effort to increase awareness of CBD and its human therapeutic potential, Nutritional Products Inc is offering free samples of its popular Sunshine Drops product in hopes of building a niche in the nutraceutical market.

Another upcoming market opportunity for companies producing CBD products is geared towards providing CBD products to those who are lactose intolerant. Currently, two dietary supplements that are currently being marketed include one that is promoted for people with gluten intolerance and one that are marketed for people with a lactose-intolerant condition. While neither product is intended to be used as a primary source of nutrition, it is interesting to note that the dietary supplements currently being marketed include ingredients that are typically only found in raw organic foods, including CBD.

Another opportunity that is currently being marketed includes the development of anti-anxiety medications. Several years ago, the government began permitting the processing of CBD as a prescription treatment for anxiety and several other conditions. Although the Food and Drug Administration has not approved these drugs for use as anxiety treatments, the prospect for profit may make this possible. At this point, the market for CBD products is limited to those that address specific issues related to anxiety, including panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In the future, it is expected that many more conditions will be addressed through the use of CBD.

It should be noted that while marijuana is often seen as a better alternative to pharmaceuticals and other types of therapy when it comes to treating the symptoms of debilitating medical conditions, many consumers have elected to utilize CBD products, including cannabis, for pain relief. Studies continue to progress with the hope of discovering additional benefits that may be associated with the therapeutic use of cannabis extracts. For now, it appears that CBD is most often used in conjunction with cannabis in order to treat a variety of medical conditions including cancer, epilepsy, chronic pain and GAD. There are currently pending studies regarding whether CBD can be helpful in combating seizures and in combating the damaging side effects of chemotherapy.
